Boiling Your Water
If you have water coming out of your tap or have access to water tankers, boiling is one of the easiest ways to help disinfect water. However, you need to be sure you are doing it the right way.
Boiling Advantages
- Kills most known water diseases.
- As easy as just boiling your kettle or pot.
- So long as your water container looks clean the boiling water should also kill any bacteria in it.
Boiling Disadvantages
- If you let the water cool down it could become infected by someone touching it or if it’s in an open container.
- If there is load shedding you can’t easily boil your water.
- It can become expensive if you use electricity or gas to boil your water.
- If your water is not boiling (when pouring it into the container) and your container is not clean then the container could infect your water.
Bleaching Your Water
Using bleach to purify water is another common source of purification. However, this way comes with risks. Read below to see the pros and cons of using bleach to disinfect water.
Bleach Advantages
- Due to its high toxicity it can kill bacteria.
- Not expensive and easy to access.
- Good for large volumes of water in public places.
Bleach Disadvantages
- You need to be sure that the bleach does not have any other toxic chemicals in that should not be added to drinking water.
- If you add too little bleach it will not disinfect the water.
- Adding too much bleach can be bad for your health.
Avoid Becoming Sick From Unsafe Drinking Water
If you are unable to boil your water or use other purification forms, you run the risk of becoming seriously ill. This could land you a trip in the hospital if you aren’t careful.
